Early October is here along with the “Indian Summer” temperatures but in just a few weeks these warm days will subside and we’ll be enjoying the cooler, windier and possibly wetter days of autumn. Let us check your car to ensure it’s ready for autumn driving conditions.
Here’s a few things to consider;
With less sun comes longer evenings. Autumn days are shorter which means you’ll be driving in the dark more. How are your headlights functioning? What about your taillights and brake lights? Even the functionality of reverse lights is important in the dark. Is everything in working order?
Colder, wet weather begins in autumn. It’s time to check your tires. How’s the tread? Are there uneven wear issues? Maybe, it’s time for a wheel alignment? Notice any dry rot on the tire side walls? When was your spare last checked? It’s important to have good tread to maintain stopping distance when the pavement is damp or wet. Nobody wants a tire to blow out, especially when it’s dark, cold or rainy.
Dark mornings and early sunsets give way to shorter days. Soon enough the change in weather will create a need to defrost both your windows and mirrors. You probably haven’t needed to turn them on in 6 months. How are they working? Do they adequately clear moisture from the window or glass surface? Do you notice a smell when the defroster is on? Let us take a look and see if any improvement is needed.
The shorter, darker, wetter days of autumn are upon us. Driving with all your accessories on, like the defroster, heater, windshield wipers, headlights, navigation and seat heaters puts strain on your battery. Cold weather also causes weaker battery cells to fail. How old is your battery? Has it been tested lately? Have you been told it’s not charging at its peak? It may be time to have it replaced. Doing this before it fails can prevent you and your car from being stranded.
Autumn is typically the time rain begins to fall. Check your windshield wiper operation. Are the wiper blades evenly clearing water from the windshield? We can help, by adjusting the arms or replacing the blades. If your car is parked outdoors, it’s likely the windshield wiper blades should be replaced annually.
