Toyota RAV4 Service and Repair in Berkeley, CA

One of Toyota’s best sellers, the RAV4 is a well designed midsized SUV. It’s sold with a variety of engines and transmissions to fit the driver’s lifestyle. Toyota began selling the RAV4 in the US in 1996. This hugely popular vehicle has undergone many “facelifts” during its 30+ years of production but the mechanicals have remained more or less the same. Most of the changes have involved technology and safety. The RAV4 is equipped with a 2.0 or 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine, they did offer a 3.5 liter V6 engine for 2005 -2012 production years but discontinued it in favor of the more reliable, lower maintenance 4 cylinder. Entering 2026 with their 6th generation design, this will be the first year Toyota is offering a fully electrified line-up for their RAV4 models.

In case you wondered, the name RAV4 stands for “Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 Wheel Drive”. It gets moderately good gas mileage, which is slightly less than what Toyota sedans get due to its larger size and heavier weight. Figures vary depending on model years, 21/28 for earlier years and 28/35mpg for new RAV4s. Of course hybrids get the best mileage especially around town with an estimated 41/38mpg. These figures given are for best practices driving.

While we consider Toyotas in general to be solidly engineered, their concepts are tested by the manufacturer before sent into production. There are just a few areas of the RAV4 that need attention. First, front and rear suspension should be inspected annually for any wear, rust or damage. We find these vehicles need front struts and rear shocks after 100,000 miles, some cars less if driven off road frequently or on rough and poorly maintained roads. Another area to keep an eye on is the braking system, given the vehicle weight it’s prone to wear brakes faster than most sedans and light duty pick-ups.  Once again be proactive and have a full brake inspection once a year and report any unusual brake operation to your auto repair shop immediately.

In addition to periodic suspension and brake inspections, a Toyota RAV4 should be serviced every 5,000 miles and every 3-5 years have the transmission, transfer case fluids changed. The engine coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid (if not equipped with electric steering) should be tested annually and replaced when needed. In the Bay Area, because we have hills, intense traffic and our close proximity to the ocean, the brake fluid may need replacement every couple years. The engine coolant and power steering fluid will last longer, typically up to 60,000 miles.
