Toyota’s 21st century super subcompact, the Yaris started production in 1999 and were first sold under the name Echo in North America starting in 2000. Renamed in 2005 the vehicles were available here until 2020. The Yaris is a base model Toyota, and was available in three different body styles; liftback, hatchback and sedan which made it a versatile choice. As the classification signifies it’s a small vehicle designed to get excellent gas mileage and be able to maneuver in, out and around metropolitan streets smoothly and quickly. Also because of its small size, it’s perfect for parking in those postage sized spots. Not equipped with a lot of extras, the Yaris is a front wheel drive vehicle with a smaller, 4 cylinder, double overhead cam style 1.3 or 1.5 liter engine.
The Yaris is a car that was commonly purchased as an inexpensive, “drive-it-until it drops” vehicle. Great for students, delivery drivers and anyone not wanting to spend a lot to keep it running, in exchange for a no frills ride and decent gas mileage estimated to be 32mpg around town to 40mpg highway.
Generally speaking, not a lot goes wrong with the Toyota Yaris. That said, it does require regular oil maintenance services every 5,000 miles to keep the engine performing optimally. Because it’s popular with students, we do see them in the garage with issues that stem from misuse. Broken suspension, worn out brakes, marginal tires and low oil level just to name some of the common concerns. It’s one of the lowest maintenance vehicles Berkeley Bob’s works on, they rarely need repair and when they do it’s usually related to severe lack of care.
